What damage does smoking cause?

Smoking causes a large amount of damage to the human body. It is also very unhealthy and puts your whole life in risk. Tobacco smoke has more than 4000 chemicals that go into your mouth, lungs and bloodstream.

The affects and diseases that smoking causes include:

  • Stains teeth, toenails and fingernails

  • Cancer in lungs, bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, larynx, and many more, so smoking is known to cause leukemia.

  • Bad vision

  • Heavy/bad breathing and lungs

  • Heart attack and damage to your arteries

  • High blood pressure

  • Asthma

  • Heart diseases

  • Lack of concentration

In Australia, there are 15,000 deaths per year, which are cause by regular long-term tobacco smoking.

If a friend or a stranger offers you a cigarette and you do not want to take it, tell them you do not smoke and don't accept the cigarette.

If they start to pressure you to take the cigarette the best thing to do in that situation is leave. If you aren't sure what to say you can say:

  • I quit smoking a few months ago

  • I like to be independent

  • I don't want my hair and clothes to smell bad

  • No thanks, I don’t smoke

  • I’m trying to get my parents to quit

Peer pressure can be very stressful and uncomfortable, you must be confident in yourself but be polite and no matter what, don’t back down no matter how many times they offer it.

Even if you only have 1 or 2 cigarettes, you are putting yourself to risk because people under the age of 21 have the most trouble and difficulty to quit.
